Renewable Energy: Solar Power Vs. Wind Power

Solar Power and wind power are the two environmentally friendly choices that most people consider when thinking about trying to get started producing their own electricity at home. I think it’s a good idea to think about options before making such a decision and that’s why I am writing this article.

Solar power is also commonly known as solar energy. It is a method which harnesses the incredible power of the sun (which is 93,000,000 miles away from earth) to create electricity.

When most think about solar energy they think of solar panels. These are also known as solar cells and by their more technical name photovoltaic cells. These are devices which take light and turn it into electricity using something called the photoelectric effect.

While most people think of solar panels as a rather new invention, this is actually not the case at all. The first solar panels were created by a man named Charles Fritts way back in the 1880s and they’ve been used to power satellites since 1954!

The amount of sunlight that you receive where you live should obviously be a consideration when deciding whether solar power is the right choice for your “DIY” renewable energy source. If you live in an area where there are far more cloudy days than average (such as in Washington State) then it may not be advisable to go the solar route, perhaps a windmill may be more suited for you.

Wind power currently makes up very little of the world’s electricity production. Currently it only accounts for about 1% of the worldwide electricity produced. But although it’s usage is still quite low, it has been increasing rapidly over the last 8 years and most assume that it’s use will increase further in the future, particularly with new President Barack Obama taking office looking to take America’s economy in a more “green” direction.

Either wind power or solar power (or perhaps even both together) would be a good choice for most people who want to power their homes themselves. Both choices create environmentally friendly renewable energy that is great for the environment.

Again, like with solar power, you need to consider where you live before deciding if wind power is right for you. If you live in a place that is particularly windy then you should definitely consider it, on the other hand you may want to think twice if your area is more calm than most. Check weather websites online for comparisons if you are not sure.

Some people worry about their power going out when the sun goes down or when it the wind stops blowing and decide against going this route. But that’s really a nonsensical fear because these types of systems are equipped with batteries for storing excess energy created when it’s very sunny or very windy so that it can be used when it’s not so sunny (like during the night) or when it’s not s windy.

It may also be a better choice economically because with a renewable source of energy, a home owner will no longer have to send money to the electric company for the electric bill every month. In fact, many electric companies will actually buy any excess electricity created by DIY home based solar panels and windmills.

Imagine that having the electric company pay you instead of you paying them and saving the environment while you do it. That’s exactly the admirable position where many people using solar & wind power at home find themselves today.

The Benefits Of Using Renewable Energy Over Fossil Fuels & Nuclear Power

By Don Alexander

Work is a force applied over a distance. Let us further define energy as a shifting back and forth, but never truly changing one thing: it’s constancy.

The first law of thermodynamics: energy is conserved. Thermodynamics is the study of the movement of heat. This law instructs us that although the kind of energy in a given system can change, the total amount can’t. Energy is able to travel seamlessly through systems, yet it never changes its structure or shape.

I find this concept enlightening, because you wouldn’t normally think of energy as such a fluid movement. It seems more. I found it fascinating that all forms of energy are interchangeable. It makes one think about the potential of newer energy as well.

All objects hold some internal energy. That is, the kinetic energy of moving atoms. Conduction is discussed as the transfer of heat through collisions of electrons and atoms. Leaders at the University of Irvine that are studying the effect of aging, and specifically how the breakdown of DNA over time, effects aging.

The group at the University of Irvine has made a fruit fly live twice as long by their experiments. As they stated, it may only be a bit more time before scientists discover a way to reverse or slow down aging, if they can discover the cause.

Thermal conductivity, the study of how energy transfer occurs, sounds very interesting. Radiation, or the movement of infrared energy and light traveling across a room, until they absorb, are also important to the second law of thermodynamics as well, because it makes one think about the process of how atoms and energy move from place to place.

The concepts of electricity and magnetism can be explained very differently from how Sir Isaac Newton explained gravitational pulls. One learns that lightning is a result of electrical charges, which come about from the transfer of electrons. That makes one think about what is going on to cause the lightning bolt, rather than just running from them!

It’s also important to note that objects with like charges experience a “get away from me” stance, while objects with opposite charges attract each other. We know that every Magnet has a north and south pole and those magnets exert forces on each other, and always contain two poles.

A compass will point at the earth’s “dipole” magnetic field. Dipole is the magnetic field that arises from the two poles of a magnet. In the previous example of the earth, that would be the north and south poles. That’s a long distance to carry forces!

That brings us to wavelengths, amplitude, and frequency. Science has discovered that ocean waves are transverse waves that move perpendicular to the direction of the waves. James Clark Maxwell discovered that electromagnetic radiation could travel through a vacuum at the speed of light. Before this, scientists must have really wondered how that happened.

Gamma rays are the highest energies in the spectrum, and they are used to treat tumors and other medical needs in hospitals. The rays cause the bad tissues to die, allowing the human to live on his/her excellent tissues. It really makes one think about what happens as light moves.

Knowing all of the above, how can we better make use of earth’s energy? The answer is renewable energy. This type of energy use taps into natural cycles such as the movement of the wind and water, the heat and light of the sun, heat in the ground, and the carbohydrates in plants. These are all natural energy sources that can supply our needs in a sustainable way.

Current levels of renewable energy use represent only a tiny fraction of what could be developed in the United States. Since electricity generation is a leading cause of carbon dioxide emissions, something needs to be done soon.

Renewable energy will also help alleviate our polluted air, water, increase plant and animal life, and help deter global warming. It’s tough though, because fossil fuels and nuclear energy are tough to compete with due to their widespread usage and politics.

Still though, I encourage you, write your congressman. Let them know that you are for renewable energy and you can even get petitions going in your area to see this come to pass. Over time, renewable energy sources could replace nuclear generation altogether. Furthermore, because renewable energy is homegrown, it can increase our energy security as a nation and create a ton of jobs as well.

Residential Wind Generators

By Mark Draper

Domestic wind generators are clearly a hot topic, and understandably so. In our age of rising energy prices. Domestic wind turbines are being fitted amid a wave of global warming fears, and the hope of saving money on energy bills.

Residential wind turbines are much smaller than those seen in commercial wind farms, but they operate in much the same way, from an output of just a few tens of watts to several kilowatts for household sized installations. These residential wind turbines are fast becoming another highly viable renewable energy solution.

Wind turbines
Wind turbines can either be building mounted or fitted on top of the tower, which is either a solid tube which will not bend or flex in the wind, or they are constructed from a lighter weight material, which needs to be secured by the use of guyed ropes.

Wind turbines are a great and can work very, very well. At the end of the day. It all comes down to location location location. If you live somewhere that doesn’t have the wind in the first place, then you just will not be able to generate enough power to justify the installation. So it might be an idea for you to investigate solar power instead.

Wind energy not only achieves payback within a few months of installation but does so from a fuel that is free and inexhaustible. The good news is that it is now possible to you to build your own residential wind turbine at home for less than $300 and it’s a lot easier than you may think.

Energy
Energy stops being a meaningless substance that comes from a wire or pipe into your home. Instead is something you can actually see being generated and energy, which is used at source is the most efficient way of utilizing renewable energy.

Electricity
Electricity and gas prices are probably going to rise another 25% this year and just keep on rising. Electricity is vital not just to keep the lights on, but to maintain our water supplies, communications, public health, Hospitals, and so on. Wind generators can offer a clean, cheap alternative to the carbon fuel generated electricity.

Residential
Residential wind turbines are clearly going to change the way we all think about electricity. At last, it is now possible for us all to generate our own electricity at home for free. Not only will this allow us to cut our bills, but also help to save the planet.

Renewable energy.
Renewable energies installed properly, can drastically reduce the cost of running your home, this is especially true when the fabric of your home has been built and insulated to the very highest of standards. In some ways, the world is fortunate that the price of oil has risen to such an extent that it is driving research and development into alternative renewable energies.

All in all, the future for residential wind generators looks good. Their relatively cheap, dead easy to install and have a fast payback period, and from that point on, the electricity produced will be free.

Capital Remodeling Inc. Manager,

Thank you very much for helping us choose Capital Remodeling Inc. for our complete home replacement window installation. We love the windows!  The blinds and curtains don’t move now when the wind blows.  The temperature difference between the two floors is much less than the 20 degrees from previous years.  It is nice to walk into the basement and not worry about forgetting your coat and gloves in the winter!  As you can see from pictures the new windows greatly improve the look of our house.  And the bay window is fantastic!  I love decorating it during the holiday seasons.  And it makes a nice sunny place for the plants.  Our dogs also enjoy being able to see the whole front yard.

I was also impressed by the speed and proficiency of the Capital Remodeling gentleman who came out to fix the two stuck windows and our shutter, and he showed up on time!

I hope to write back to you next year to let you know the difference in our electricity and gas bills.  I’ll also include more pictures of the new window undecorated, and a picture including the whole front of the house.

Thanks again for everything Capital Remodeling Inc.

                                                                        Sincerely,
